How to Track and Report GivingTuesday Contributions: Understanding Schedule B

Estimated reading time: 9 minute(s)

GivingTuesday is one of the most exciting times of the year for nonprofits. Donations pour in from generous supporters who want to make a difference. While it is a time to celebrate generosity, it is also important to stay organized since contribution tracking can be complex.

The donations you receive can affect your annual Form 990, especially on Schedule B. If donor information is not recorded carefully as donations arrive, it can be difficult to identify which supporters meet the Schedule B threshold later in the year. Taking time now to organize your data will prevent confusion when it is time to file.

How to Stay Organized For GivingTuesday

To keep your records accurate and ready for Schedule B:

  1. Record every donation promptly in your donor management or accounting system.
  2. Track each donor’s total giving across all channels, not just GivingTuesday.
  3. Keep donor contact information up to date.
  4. Reconcile totals regularly to match your records with deposits.
  5. Flag large donations early so you can prepare the right information for Schedule B.

What Is Schedule B?

Schedule B (Schedule of Contributors) is part of IRS Form 990, Form 990-EZ, and 990-PF. It lists certain donors who contribute significant amounts to your organization during the year. The purpose of this schedule is to show transparency about major gifts while protecting donor privacy in the public version of your filing.

Who Must File Schedule B

Organizations are required to complete 990 Schedule B if they meet either the “General Rule” or one of the “Special Rules”.

General Rule:

  • You are required to e-file Form 990-PF, 990-EZ, or 990-PF and have received contributions of $5,000 or more from any one contributor during the tax year.

Special Rules:

Section 501(c)(3) organizationsSection 501(c)(7), (8), or (10) organizationsSection 501(c)(7), (8), or (10) organizations
Organizations that file 990 or 990-EZ while meeting the 33 ⅓ % support test and have received $5000 or 2% of the total contributions (greater) from any one contributor.Organizations that file 990 or 990-EZ and have received contributions of more than $1,000 from any one contributor specifically for religious, charitable, scientific or educational purposes, or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals.Organizations that file Form 990-EZ or 990 and have received contributions of less than $1,000 from any one contributor specifically for religious, charitable, and similar purposes.

Even if most GivingTuesday donations are small, one or two large gifts can require you to include that donor on Schedule B.

What Information Is Reported

If you are required to file Schedule B, you need to include:

  • The name and address of each reportable donor
  • The amount of each contribution
  • The type of gift (cash, noncash, stock, and so on)
  • The date or dates of the contributions

This information helps the IRS confirm that contributions are properly tracked and reported.

Staying Compliant and Confident

GivingTuesday can boost both your fundraising and your visibility. Staying organized behind the scenes helps ensure that success continues. Accurate tracking supports compliance, builds trust with donors, and strengthens your organization’s credibility.
