Today is a Major Deadline for Certain Tax-Exempt and Politicial Organizations

Estimated reading time: 8 minute(s)

The IRS 990 deadline for the month of April is here, and several organizations are required to submit their 990 returns before the day ends. Whether you’re a nonprofit filing Form 990 or a political organization filing Form 1120-POL, Tax990 has everything you need to stay IRS-compliant and avoid penalties — even if you’re filing at the last minute.

Who’s required to file today?

Several organizations are required to meet today’s IRS deadline. If your organization falls into any one of the following categories, you must file your return before the end of the day:

  • Nonprofits with a fiscal year ending November 30, 2024, must file one of the applicable Form 990 series returns: Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-N, or 990-PF.
  • If you filed Form 8868 and received a 6-month extension – originally due on October 15, 2024 your 990 returns are due today.
  • If your organization fits one of these classifications, you must file Form 990-T:
    • Employee retirement trusts (Section 401(a))
    • IRAs (including SEP, SIMPLE, and Roth)
    • Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs)
    • Archer Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs)
  • Political organizations with taxable income over $100 must file Form 1120-POL.
