‘This the season…to file your 990 series return!
Today is the deadline for certain tax-exempt organizations to file their annual 990 series return with the IRS. This blog provides a guide to which organizations are required to meet this deadline and how to get started and complete their return by midnight!
Which Organizations Must File 990 Returns in December?
For most 990 series returns, the deadline to file is the 15th day of the 5th month after the tax period ends. Based on this IRS rule, the following organizations have a deadline in December:
- Those whose tax year ended on July 31, 2023
- Those whose original deadline was June 15, 2023, but they requested a 6-month extension by filing Form 8868 (and the extension was approved by the IRS).
Your organization’s accounting period, and additional important information, can be found in its IRS determination letter.
Which 990 Return Does My Organization Need To File?
There are several 990 series forms designated for specific organizations and purposes. The form you file will depend on your organization’s size, function, and gross receipts.
Tax990 supports the filing of Form 990, 990-N, 990-EZ, 990-PF, 990-T, CA Form 199, 1120-POL, 8038-CP, and Form 8868.

Can I Request an Extension?
If you need any extra time to gather your information and prepare your form, you can file for a 6-month extension using Form 8868. You must file this form by December 15th to receive an extension. Please note, you can’t request an extension for Form 990-N. If you have already filed an extension for the 2023 tax year, you cannot request another one.
