Understanding IRS Error Codes: Fixing an Incorrect Exempt Status on 990 Returns

Welcome to the next installment of our ‘Understanding IRS Error Codes’ blog!

If you receive any of the following  E-file Error Code F990-913-01, F990-912-01, or F990-PF-906-01: this is an indication that the the tax-exempt status section in the return doesn’t match with the IRS E-file database, or the type of organization chosen in the Form 990-PF didn’t match with the IRS E-file database.

In this blog, we will break down the different error codes associated with indicating an incorrect tax-exempt status, what they mean, and the next steps for correcting this.

What is Error Code F990-913-01, F990-912-01, or F990-PF-906-01?

These errors indicate that the tax-exempt status you provided on your 990 series return does not match what the IRS has on file for your organization.

A tax-exempt status is determined by the IRS as a category in which your organization operates, such as a 501(c)(3).

If you receive the above-stated error, that means the status provided, is not the same as what is in the IRS records.

This information is indicated in the organization’s IRS determination letter.

Next Steps: Checking Your Determination Letter

First, reference your IRS determination letter or previously filed and accepted tax forms. If you do not have this documentation, you will need to contact the IRS to determine what our organization’s tax-exempt status is.

The IRS Tax Exempt Hotline is 877-829-5500. When you call the IRS, you should have your EIN and organization name readily available.
